A brilliant book. In the first half Kalanithi describes his pathway into neurosurgery and his developing career. One wonders how anyone can survive the pressures and responsibilities of neurosurgery (read Henry Marsh's "Do No Harm" for more about that). The second half of the book describes Kalanithi's experiences after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in his 30s. He well captures the ups and downs of not knowing whether he will live for 1 month or 1 year or, perhaps, even 10 years. Even with a terminal illness human beings want some sense of a map of the future - uncertainty is hard to endure. Read this book!
